The six-step dental implant procedure
With over 30 years of experience in dentistry, Dr. Baker has refined the dental implant process for a seamless experience. Our office blends state-of-the-art technology with personalized care for superior dental implant outcomes.
The following are the six steps for restoring your smile with a dental implant.
- Initial consultation: Before any work is done, you’ll visit Dr. Baker for a consultation. We’ll comprehensively examine your oral health and take a series of digital X-rays to establish you have a healthy bone to support an implant.
- Pre-surgery procedures: Some patients go straight to implant surgery, but others need prior treatments before surgery. If you have insufficient jawbone, we’ll recommend bone grafting to stabilize your bone for implantology. Moreover, patients with failing teeth may need extraction to replace these teeth with predictable implants.
- Implant placement: Dr. Baker uses her experience, skills, and innovative technology to place a “tissue-friendly” titanium post at a precise location in the jawbone. Your implant post becomes the new tooth root, giving your prosthetic tooth (teeth) optimal stability.
- Healing and fusion: After implant surgery, the dentist will suture the implant site to pave the way for healing. Over the next three to six months, your implant will fuse with the jawbone through osseointegration to form a stable biological structure to support one or more prosthetic teeth.
- Abutment placement: After you complete the first healing phase, you will come to our office for minor surgery to place an abutment, which connects the implant post to the final restoration. During abutment placement, we’ll make a small incision on the gums to reveal the implant. Once we attach the small metal connector, you’ll only need two weeks to heal.
- Implant restoration: After your second round of healing, you’ll come to our office to restore your implant with a custom-made dental crown. Sometimes, this could be a dental bridge or denture if replacing several teeth. Whatever the restoration type, your new smile will look and function like natural teeth. You’ll no longer live with the shame of tooth loss—you’ll eat, smile, and speak without worrying about your teeth.
After implant placement, ongoing care is vital to maintain your restoration and overall smile. This maintenance involves everyday brushing, flossing, and visiting a dentist every six months for routine exams and cleanings.
